The recent PvinMotion conference in Neuchatel, dedicated to vehicle-integrated photovoltaics (VIPV), strongly resonated with the mission of the Association for Solar Mobility (ASOM). ASOM, committed to nurturing the VIPV community, saw active engagement from its members during the event, with participation in presentations and panel discussions.

A diverse array of researchers, industry leaders and innovators took the stage, including ASOM members such as OPES Solutions, Lightyear, TNO, Fraunhofer, CSEM, AGC, Toyota, Infinite Mobility, University of Lisbon, and many others who joined the audience. With over 120 attendees gathered in Neuchatel, the conference provided an excellent opportunity for networking and staying updated on the latest developments in modeling, real-time on-the-road measurements, lightweight constructions, manufacturing advancements, integration concepts and impact on power grids.

To kick off the event, ASOM organized a networking evening featuring a pub quiz, which attracted over 50 VIPV enthusiasts from more than ten different nationalities. The quiz comprised 15 questions covering topics related to Europe, solar technology, and fun trivia.

The PvinMotion conference underscored the potential of solar technology for vehicles, with numerous institutes worldwide exploring VIPV solutions. Key takeaways included insights such as minimal heating effects for cooling trailers equipped with dark PV solar panels, significant variances in solar irradiation within and outside cities, and the notable impact of glass building reflections. Informative posters delved into safety considerations and the influence of power management systems on solar effectiveness.

The event illustrated the strategic importance of solar mobility and shows that Europe is positioning itself as a frontrunner in solar applications in the automotive sector. The event featured real demonstrations of available and in-manufacturing products, with Tier 1 companies like AGC and Simoldes or Start-Ups such as Lightyear showcasing solutions for various components for passenger cars. In the commercial vehicle sector, OPES Solutions showcased its solar factory in Germany set to commence production in the end of the year. Beyond the scientific potential of VIPV, the event underscored Europe’s capability to lead the market for solar-supported transportation solutions across all types of vehicles.

A highlight of the conference was the visit to Solar Stratos, where attendees witnessed a solar plane in flight and gained insights into taking solar-powered aircraft to the stratosphere.

There is well established community in the field, welcoming new entrants and participants while providing excellent networking opportunities.

Looking ahead to 2024, ASOM anticipates more vehicles equipped with integrated PV systems hitting the roads. Continued studies and measurements will be crucial in validating and elucidating the role of on-board PV in offering sustainable solar mobility solutions for diverse vehicle types.

As part of its ongoing commitment, ASOM will host a side event at the IAA Transportation in Hanover with bringing together industry experts from the automotive and VIPV field and establishing the tradition of a pub quiz as part of an evening networking event. We hope to see you there!
